Steps to Become a Paraprofessional (Educational Aide) in Huntington ISD
Step 1: Understand the Role of a Paraprofessional
A paraprofessional (educational aide) provides instructional support under the supervision of a certified teacher. Duties may include:
- Assisting with classroom instruction and management
- Providing one-on-one or small group support
- Supporting computer labs, libraries, or media centers
- Assisting with parent engagement activities
- Translating or providing instructional support services
Step 2: Meet Basic Employment Requirements
To be considered for a paraprofessional position, you must:
- Hold a high school diploma or GED
- Have experience working with students or parents (preferred by district)
Step 3: Meet “Highly Qualified” Requirements (if applicable)
For Title I campuses or federally funded positions, you must meet one of the following:
- Complete at least 48 college credit hours, OR
- Earn an associate’s degree (or higher), OR
- Pass a local academic assessment demonstrating ability to assist in reading, writing, and math
- Huntington ISD will administer this assessment prior to employment
Note: Positions focused only on translation or parent involvement may be exempt from this requirement.
Step 4: Apply for Employment with Huntington ISD
You must first be hired by the district before applying for state certification.
- Submit an application through Huntington ISD
- Complete interviews and hiring requirements
Step 5: Receive District Approval to Apply for Certification
Once hired, the district will instruct you when to apply for your Educational Aide certificate.
Do not apply independently without district direction, as your application will not be processed.
Step 6: Create TEAL and ECOS Accounts
Set up your accounts through the Texas Education Agency system:
- TEAL (Texas Education Agency Login)
- ECOS (Educator Certification Online System)
These systems are used to submit and track your certification application.
Step 7: Apply for the Educational Aide Certificate
In ECOS:
- Select “Applications” → “Educational Aide Certificate”
- Complete the application
- The district will determine your certification level:
- Educational Aide I
- Educational Aide II
- Educational Aide III
- Fee will be paid by Huntington ISD

Step 8: Complete Fingerprinting and Background Check
All applicants must complete a criminal history review and fingerprinting as required by the state.
Step 9: Maintain Your Certification
- Educational Aide certificates are valid for 2 years
- Certificates are non-renewable
- You must reapply every two years through the same process
Educational Aide Certification Levels
Educational Aide I
You must:
- Hold a high school diploma or GED
- Have experience working with students or parents
High school students (age 18+) may qualify with approved coursework in education and training programs.
Educational Aide II
You must:
- Meet Aide I requirements, AND one of the following:
- 2 years of experience as an Aide I
- 15 college credit hours (child development or related field)
- Demonstrated specialized skills
Educational Aide III
You must:
- Meet Aide I requirements, AND one of the following:
- 3 years of experience as an Aide I or II
- 30 college credit hours (child development or related field)
