The purpose of the Child Nutrition Program is to safeguard the health and well being of our children by providing nutritionally adequate meals each school day and ensuring that children gain a full understanding of the relationship between proper eating and good health.
Lunch Program
The National School Lunch Program provides nutritional balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children each school day.

The Offer Versus Serve method of serving is used to reduce food waste and food costs in the school lunch program without jeopardizing the nutritional integrity of the lunches served. All five of the required food items are offered, however, a student may refuse one or two of the food items that he/she does not intend to eat.
Breakfast Program
The School Breakfast Program, offered at all HISD schools, provides nutritionally balanced, economically priced or free breakfasts to all children each school day. The program was established under the Child Nutrition Act of 1966 to ensure that all children have access to a healthy breakfast at school to promote learning readiness and healthy eating behaviors.
After-School Snack Program
The After-School Snack Program is sometimes offered at the elementary and intermediate schools.
